The Beta Tournament is a national competition in the Netherlands for vocational school students aged 15 to 16. The tournament is one of the STEM activities that PPG supports as part of its partnership with the non-profit Dutch educational center Centrum JongerenCommunicatie Chemie (C3). This educational center introduces children and young people to chemistry and life sciences.
Competition in Arnhem and Eindhoven
The beta tournament took place at the secondary level of two vocational schools in Arnhem and Eindhoven. The students conducted experiments on the subject of color in teams of three. In Arnhem, the students from NSG Groenewoud in Nijmegen won first prize; in Eindhoven, first prize went to the students from Newmancollege in Breda. A total of 39 teams took part in the competition.
Sponsor of the first prize
PPG sponsored the first prize. Topsector Chemistry, a cooperation between business, science and government that promotes innovation and knowledge exchange, sponsored the second prize, and the Royal Dutch Chemical Association (VNCI) sponsored the third prize. The competition includes an annual workshop program for teachers that ties in with the students' assignments and addresses the latest developments in education. Teachers can also take part in the competition without a student team.
Promoting STEM professions worldwide
PPG and the PPG Foundation are helping to develop STEM innovators and a skilled workforce in fields related to coating and manufacturing by supporting organizations in nearly 40 countries. In addition, PPG employees are committed to the same goal through volunteerism and donations.
