WZL researches green laser for highly reflective materials

A project of the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) at RWTH Aachen University aims to develop a green laser. This is suitable for the highly reflective materials copper and aluminum.

In order to improve the performance of the green laser for the production of electric vehicle components, a comprehensive concept for a modular laser processing unit with green laser radiation is being developed and compared with conventional infrared lasers as part of the WZL research project "GreenPls". To this end, the researchers are working in parallel on process optimization and monitoring, fixture and safety technology, and the system layout.

At the WZL of RWTH Aachen University, the research work is practically implemented in the infrastructure of the start-up factory at RWTH Aachen University and tested under real conditions: For this purpose, fixture components and prototype parts are manufactured using laser cutting and additive manufacturing. The safety concept and the battery prototypes of the laser welding cell are also being developed, tested and built. This consideration of process development through to a complete system layout is intended to help ensure that the research results can be rapidly put to industrial use.
