Plastic and plastic mixtures are being used more and more frequently in vehicles. Correct preparation is crucial for the repair, as otherwise paint defects can occur when applying the top coat or a two-coat paint system. According to Erik Faßbender, Head of Training at Standox, Refinish Systems Germany, it is therefore also worth carrying out the individual steps carefully when using Standox products.
Proceed step by step
These include thorough cleaning and inspection of the damaged area. This is followed by sanding down the damage using a random orbital sander, applying a filler to smooth the surface and sanding the surface thoroughly again. Only then is Standoflex Plastic Primer U3060 or Standoflex Plastic Adhesion Primer U3070 applied. Once it has evaporated, a suitable Standox VOC filler can be used. To achieve permanent elasticity, this should be elasticized with Standox Elastic Additive 5660.

"Only after these seven preparatory steps have been completed when repairing plastic parts with minor damage should a refinisher even think about applying the selected Standox topcoat or two-coat paint system," advises Erik Faßbender. In addition, refinishers should not forget to add Standox Elastic Additive 5660 to the topcoat or clearcoat. "In addition, the vehicle manufacturer's specific bumper repair processes must be followed. Coating thickness restrictions and any sensor requirements must also be strictly observed," says Faßbender.
