White, black and gray were the most popular car colors in 2022, says Axalta's 70th study on the subject. The study is the oldest and most comprehensive color study in the automotive industry.

"Today's vehicles are painted in shades that are even more intense than ever before," explains Robert Schnell, Vice President, Global Sales & Product Management at Axalta. "Compared to the white color variations of the 1950s, for example, today's whites are more brilliant and made to shine with shimmering effects. White, black, gray and silver are the most common automotive colors on the road, accounting for a total of 82 percent."

Globally, whites are the most popular vehicle colors (34 percent overall). Pearlescent whites account for 14 percent, and solid whites 20 percent. In second place on the popularity scale are deep black shades, which shine in modern metallic and pearl effects and account for a total of 21 percent of vehicles on the road. Gray shades (19%), in turn, feature effects in a variety of multicolored hues. Colorful variations of blue (8 %), red (5 %) and green (1 %) have a high overall color intensity and brilliance.
