The partnership has been in place since 2017, and since 2018 Covestro has served as the team’s main sponsor and technology partner. The aim of the collaboration is to develop high-performance, resource-efficient solar vehicles for international competitions such as the World Solar Challenge.
Materials for Lightweight Design and Energy Management
A range of the company’s polymer materials is used in the current vehicle, “Æthon.” These include materials for structural components, battery temperature management, and transparent and protective parts. One focus is on materials that combine mechanical performance with functional properties such as thermal conductivity or energy absorption.
Applications in Vehicle Structure and Interior
The materials used can be found in various areas of the vehicle, including the outer shell, cockpit structure, and interior. The team also uses solutions aimed at more resource-efficient processing, such as coating systems with reduced curing temperatures.
Competitions and Ongoing Development
Team Sonnenwagen regularly takes part in international competitions. Its most recent results include placements in European solar races and a fourth-place finish at the 2025 World Solar Challenge. The team is planning to compete in the European Solar Challenge in 2026. In addition, it is working on a new vehicle scheduled to be used in the 2027 World Solar Challenge.
