BASF increases BDO production at Ludwigshafen

BASF is gradually increasing the production of 1,4-butanediol (BDO) at its Ludwigshafen site, thereby securing supplies for European customers along the entire acetylene value chain. BDO is a key raw material for numerous industrial and anti-corrosion coatings.

BASF's Intermediates division is expanding its production capacity for 1,4-butanediol (BDO) in Ludwigshafen. The aim is to ensure a stable and reliable supply to European customers, particularly in light of current market distortions such as the recent BDO anti-dumping proceedings. For manufacturers of industrial and corrosion protection coatings, 1,4-butanediol serves as a starting material for polyurethanes and polyester resins. The availability of this key raw material has a direct impact on performance and supply security in the coatings industry.

BASF increases the availability of key derivatives such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), polytetrahydrofuran (PolyTHF) and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) through the integrated complex structure at the site. These are important starting materials for polymers, solvents, elastomers and other high-performance materials.

Integrated value chain as a resilience factor

By increasing BDO production, BASF is focusing on regional production capacities and an integrated acetylene value chain. This is intended to increase the resilience of downstream markets and enable reliable production planning for customers. BDO is a key intermediate product for numerous industries, such as automotive, textiles, pharmaceuticals, and consumer goods manufacturing. BASF operates BDO plants in Ludwigshafen, Germany, and Geismar, Louisiana, USA.

More sustainable BDO variants in the portfolio

In parallel with expanding production, BASF is further developing its portfolio of more sustainable solutions. These include biomass-balanced (BMB) variants of BDO, THF and PolyTHF, which save fossil raw materials and reduce the product carbon footprint (PCF). Production in the integrated Verbund also enables shorter transport routes and more efficient use of energy and material flows—a further contribution to reducing emissions along the value chain.
