Wooden walkway on dementia ward receives anti-slip coating from Grip

A wooden walkway made of Accoya was installed at the Sonnmatt dementia ward in Niederuzwil, Switzerland. "Sonnmatt is home to people who receive special care and protection and should not leave the area. A row of wooden benches and the wooden walkway with handrail invite people to take a walk and linger in nature," says Managing Director Willi Roth. However, the slightly inclined and curved walkway tended to develop moss and fungus quickly. In wet weather, the surface became slippery. "People with dementia are often unsteady when walking, many of them use a rollator or are pushed in a wheelchair. So it's about the slip factor on the one hand and safety on the other," says Roth.

Safety for dementia patients

In search of a solution, Roth turned to the specialists at GriP Safety Coatings AG. To ensure the safety of residents, visitors and staff, the wooden surface and the associated benches were coated with SwissGrip from GriP Safety Coatings AG.

Transparent and weatherproof anti-slip coating

The wooden walkway made of Accoya with a total surface area of 77 square meters was coated in one day by a specialist using a special spraying process. The transparent and weatherproof GSAS anti-slip coating with anti-slip class R11 was used. This granular two-component coating is solvent-free, environmentally friendly and does not damage the substrate. SwissGrip complies with DIN EN 16165 (formerly DIN 51130) and can be used both indoors and outdoors. The anti-slip coating is TÜV-certified, UV-resistant and resistant to disinfectants. After a day's drying time, the wooden walkway could be walked on again.

A safe feeling for people

Roth is just as satisfied with the decision to coat the wooden walkway with SwissGrip as he is with the result: "We received feedback from Haus Sonnmatt that it is good for the residents, visitors and staff. The bottom line is that giving people a feeling of safety is the most important point."
