Aerosol deposition is a cold coating process. A binder-free powder aerosol is accelerated to 600 meters per second by the pressure difference between two chambers. The ceramic particles of the coating powder hit the substrate surface with high kinetic energy. The particles break into nanometer-sized fragments on the component surface. The resulting microstructure is nanocrystalline, non-porous, highly dense, and exhibits very high bond strength due to the chemical bonding between the coating and substrate. Aerosol deposition is a versatile process: Depending on the material used, it can be used for electrical insulation layers, thermally conductive layers, corrosion and abrasion protection, as an adhesion promoter or for surface finishing, and can even be used to produce free-standing metal layers.
