Zinq draws positive environmental balance

The ecoZINQ zinc surface generates 43 percent less CO2 emissions than conventional piece galvanized surfaces. Zinq took measures over the entire product life cycle to achieve this.

For its ecoZINQ product, Zinq can boast the lowest carbon footprint in the industry at present, according to the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) in accordance with EN 15804. "We prove the positive impact of our product in the form of carbon credits. To determine the value, we compare ecoZINQ's low CO2 emissions over the entire product life cycle with the highest-quality paint coatings currently available. The positive difference calculated from this is credited to our customers as total CO2 savings," says Lars Baumgürtel, managing partner of ZINQ GmbH & Co. KG. At +185 kilograms of CO2 per ton of steel, every ecoZINQ customer currently receives the highest CO2 credits in the industry.

To achieve this, Zinq uses exclusively CO2-reduced primary zinc for ecoZINQ. The company also switched its electricity requirements to green power more than ten years ago. In parallel, many individual measures were implemented in the company's own production processes. These include optimized process control in pretreatment and at the zinc baths. Like all other ZINQ surfaces, the new brand product is Cradle-to-Cradle certified and therefore free of microplastics and other toxic substances that stand in the way of recycling in closed material cycles.
