Wenglor is expanding its product portfolio with the P2PY111 time-of-flight sensor for measurement and detection tasks in hygienically sensitive areas. The sensor is designed for applications in the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries and combines time-of-flight technology with a seamless stainless steel housing.

With the P2PY111, Wenglor is introducing a time-of-flight sensor designed specifically for applications with stringent hygiene requirements in the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries. The laser distance sensor operates on the time-of-flight principle and is designed for measurement and detection tasks in areas where cleanability, material resistance, and reliable object detection are required.

The sensor features a stainless steel housing with a gap-free design. This is intended to prevent contaminants from accumulating in the housing area. Wenglor also relies on its proprietary wintec technology, which operates interference-free. The P2PY111 is therefore also suitable for use directly above open food products as well as in pharmaceutical applications.

Designed for hygienic environments

According to the product specifications, every detail has been optimized for use in hygienic areas. These features include permanently legible labeling achieved through direct laser engraving, a special TPE cable, a teach-in button made of FDA-compliant silicone, and a captive PMMA optical lens. The cable connection is equipped with an IP69K cable gland and a food-grade blue seal. Suitable clamps and mounts are available for hygienic mounting, including solutions with angle compensation of up to 10°.

Designed for use in harsh environments, the sensor is resistant to cleaning agents and has Ecolab approval for washdown applications. The temperature range extends from −40 °C to +55 °C. Wenglor cites other features such as high immunity to extraneous light up to 100,000 lux and IO-Link V1.1 for integration into automation systems.

Detection Even on Challenging Surfaces

The high reception sensitivity is designed to enable reliable detection even with weak signals. According to Wenglor, this allows for the reliable detection of dark or shiny objects, as well as objects at extreme angles. The P2PY111’s operating range extends from 50 mm to 10,000 mm.

This is particularly relevant for applications with high hygiene requirements and, at the same time, challenging surfaces. In the pharmaceutical industry, the sensor detects transparent bags; in the food and beverage industry, it is designed for object detection directly above open products. Wenglor describes the advantage of the housing design as follows: “Since the housing has no gaps, potential areas where dirt can accumulate are consistently avoided.”

With the P2PY111, Wenglor is thus addressing applications where hygienic design and robust optical distance measurement must be combined. The sensor complements the existing portfolio with a solution for washdown environments and hygienically sensitive production areas.
