Teledyne FLIR develops and manufactures its portable thermal imaging cameras at European locations. A key focus is on Tallinn, Estonia, and Täby, Sweden. There, development, assembly, testing, and quality control are closely integrated in a single location.

This approach differs from the supply and manufacturing structures common in the electronics industry, which are often spread across multiple countries. For portable thermal imaging cameras, engineering teams, production, and quality assurance remain in close proximity. This is intended to make it easier to detect deviations in the manufacturing process early on and correct them immediately, rather than having to track them down through a complex supply chain.

Locations in Estonia and Sweden

The facility in Tallinn covers 4,300 m² and has 23 production lines. According to the company, approximately 215 employees manufacture about 215,000 cameras there annually. A total of just under 180,000 work hours are allocated to this effort.

In Sweden, Täby is the central location for the Solutions business unit. The 5,000 m² facility produces approximately 11,000 cameras annually and generates about half of this business unit’s global revenue. About 125 employees work there. The focus is on production and warehousing, supplemented by development, order processing, shipping, and supply chain operations.

Applications in Industry and Building Services

The portable thermal imaging cameras are used in a variety of applications. In industry, they are used, among other things, to detect overheated bearings or electrical anomalies at an early stage. In building services, they help detect moisture or leaky seals. Emergency responders also use the devices, for example, when visibility is severely limited by smoke.

Koen Jacobs, VP of Sales EMEA – Instrumentation at Teledyne FLIR, emphasizes the importance of European manufacturing: “Our engineers, production teams, and assembly lines are based in Tallinn and Sweden.” Regarding the origin of the products, he adds: “As customers are paying increasingly close attention to where products come from and how they are manufactured, we are proud to be able to showcase the people and production facilities behind our cameras.”

Teledyne FLIR is part of Teledyne Technologies and develops thermal imaging cameras and sensors for public safety, industry, defense, and consumer goods. The portable systems are designed for applications where thermal anomalies need to be detected early, before they lead to failures or damage.
