Activation, cleaning and coating on almost all materials: Surface treatment with open-air plasma can deliver good painting results while it reduces the CO2 footprint.

Dry and primer-free surface treatment with open-air plasma is the focus of Plasmatreat GmbH's trade fair appearance at PaintExpo 2024. The manufacturer of atmospheric plasma systems and equipment will be demonstrating how activation, cleaning and coating work on various materials such as plastic, glass and metal. Visitors can also find out how they can significantly reduce their carbon footprint in manufacturing processes.

Low surface energy leads to poor adhesion

When components are difficult to paint, the cause is usually low surface energy or a contaminated surface. Homogeneous wettability is only guaranteed if the surface energy is higher than that of the paint.

Advantages of plasma technology

In contrast to many conventional pre-treatment methods, plasma technology has advantages: it can be used inline, selectively, but also over the entire surface. "Environmentally harmful, wet-chemical primers can be completely dispensed with when using the dry open-air plasma process. This also reduces the release of VOCs, volatile organic compounds, into the atmosphere," explains Joachim Schüßler, Head of Sales Germany at Plasmatreat GmbH.

Reducing the CO2 footprint

Manufacturers can also reduce their carbon footprint by using plasma surface treatment: the reactive plasma species are generated by a combination of compressed air and electricity; solvents or large quantities of gas are not required for flame treatment. By using fast-drying UV coatings in combination with open-air plasma, drying in ovens can be dispensed with during pre-treatment.
