No longer an insider tip

Woodworkers are discovering the advantages of powder coating: Not only high energy costs make low-temperature powder coatings an attractive option. They can also be used to coat substrates that rely on low curing temperatures. One example of this is a classic material that is becoming increasingly trendy: wood.

In the coating of metal, they have long established an industry standard, but in wood, powder coatings are still more of an insider tip. But as the manufacturer Tiger Coatings from Wels, Austria, observes, powder coating is increasingly establishing itself as an alternative to wet paint in wood processing. This is especially true when coating medium-density fiberboard (MDF), which is commonly used in the furniture industry.

"Powder coating of wood-based materials is - in contrast to IGP's core markets, where powder coating has been established for a long time - still in a nascent stage," also says a spokesman for producer IGP Pulvertechnik, based in Wil, Switzerland. However, the company is noticing an increasing interest in powder coating technology and therefore expects it to become more widespread.
