New PU textile coatings with antimicrobial technology from Covestro and Heraeus

Covestro and Heraeus Precious Metals have jointly developed an antimicrobial coating for textiles. The solution is based on water-based PU dispersions and a precious metal technology without silver ions.

Laboratory tests show that Heraeus' AGXX antimicrobial surface technology is compatible with Covestro's Impranil PU dispersions. The materials are part of the water-based INSQIN textile coating technology and enable durable, BPR-compliant surfaces with antimicrobial properties. Areas of use include, in particular, heavily frequented applications such as office furniture in shared offices, vehicle interiors in car sharing or seats in public transport.

Alternative to silver ion-based solutions

Traditional antimicrobial systems often rely on the release of silver ions. However, these are increasingly being criticized as part of the EU biocide review process. AGXX, on the other hand, uses a catalytic reaction of two precious metals that converts oxygen into reactive oxygen species (ROS) using atmospheric moisture. ROS destroy microbes such as bacteria, fungi or viruses without releasing silver ions. AGXX also has no effect on manufacturing processes.

Advantages for the coating industry

The integration of AGXX does not affect the processing or properties of PU dispersions. Manufacturers can therefore produce coated textiles with a durable antimicrobial effect without having to adapt their processes. In addition to hygiene and durability, users benefit from the advantages of water-based systems with a low VOC content.
