Lhyfe opens Germany's largest hydrogen plant

Up to four tons of RFNBO-certified hydrogen per day for industry and heavy-duty transport are produced at Lhyfe's fourth European production facility.

Lhyfe has inaugurated its first commercial production site in Germany in Baden-Württemberg. With an installed capacity of 10 MW, the plant in Schwäbisch Gmünd is currently the largest commercial production facility for renewable hydrogen in Germany. It can produce up to four tons of hydrogen per day and is fully geared towards the free market.

The site is Lhyfe's fourth production plant and also its first outside France. Production is carried out by means of water electrolysis using renewable energy. RFNBO (Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin) certification was granted in September 2025, confirming compliance with European requirements in accordance with the Renewable Energy Directive and EU taxonomy.

Production for industry and mobility

Four tons of renewable hydrogen per day are sufficient to operate around 100 trucks daily over approximately 400 kilometers without CO₂ emissions. In addition to applications in heavy-duty transport, Lhyfe is particularly targeting industrial customers who want to replace fossil fuels or gray hydrogen—for example, in the chemical, steel, or glass industries.

A supply contract with H2 Mobility to supply regional hydrogen filling stations has already been concluded. In addition, there are plans to supply the planned "H2-Aspen" industrial park in Schwäbisch Gmünd. To ensure a renewable electricity supply, power purchase agreements (PPA) have been concluded with German energy producers, including EDPR.

Container construction and integrated logistics

The plant was built using modular container construction. The so-called stacks cover the entire production process: power conversion, water treatment, electrolysis, purification, compression, and filling. With its own filling stations and a fleet of trailers, Lhyfe ensures a continuous supply.

The company operates 70 modern tube trailers across Europe with capacities between 380 and 1,000 kilograms of hydrogen, making it one of the largest providers in the field of mobile hydrogen logistics. In 2024, over 470 deliveries were made in Europe with a service rate of 99 percent.

Funding project of the H2 transition model region

The project is part of the model region "H2 Transformation – Green Hydrogen Baden-Württemberg." It is funded by the state of Baden-Württemberg with 2.1 million euros and by the European Union via the ERDF fund with 4.3 million euros. With the new location, Lhyfe is further expanding its activities in Germany. The company has been present locally since 2020 and has been supplying customers with renewable hydrogen since 2023.
