Diode laser-based cladding of brake discs reduces urban particulate emissions: Brake disc cladding using diode lasers is becoming increasingly popular due to the surface quality that can be achieved as well as the speed and cost-effectiveness of the process. New possibilities for component and process monitoring not only facilitate quality control, but also digitalization.

Scientific studies show that one of the main causes of urban particulate matter cannot be eliminated even by switching to e-mobility - the abrasion of traditional cast iron brake discs. In fact, brake dust from motorized road and rail vehicles accounts for over a quarter of urban particulate matter pollution. Reducing the abrasion of brake discs and pads therefore plays a key role in reducing particulate emissions. The new Euro 7 emissions standard, which is scheduled for introduction in the summer of 2025, therefore stipulates specific limit values for the development of brake dust for the first time.

Diode laser combines corrosion and abrasion protection

Laser coating of brake discs has emerged as a technically extremely effective and at the same time economical solution to the problem of fine dust. Realized using high-performance diode lasers, it combines long-term corrosion protection with long-lasting abrasion protection. The process has now been tried and tested and can be used in series production.
