Plastics are lightweight and extremely malleable. This makes them an all-round talent for countless applications and industries. This is also true of the Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) and the Bulk Molding Compound (BMC): Here, plate-like, dough-like masses of thermosetting reactive resins and glass fibers are pressed into their subsequent shapes. Powder coating can be integrated directly into the molding process. Until now, only the standard RAL colors have been available worldwide for this process.
The researchers at Frei Lacke have now succeeded in expanding the spectrum to include three metallic shades - standard, pearlescent and silver - with further shades to follow soon. The development at Frei was prompted by a customer inquiry: A manufacturer of facade elements, who has been working with the Black Forest paint professionals for many years, wanted to coat PIMC elements directly in a metallic look. So the paint experts got to work and managed to develop a practical solution in just three months.
