Brenntag aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2045. To achieve this, the company has extensively rebuilt its site in Traun, Austria, in recent months and redesigned the entire energy system. This is the first time a chemical distribution site has been redesigned to be 100 percent CO₂-free. Brenntag is thus proving that completely climate-neutral operations are possible in chemical distribution. A total of more than 1.5 million euros was invested in the redesign. The site is now regarded as a blueprint for the 600 Brenntag sites in over 70 countries worldwide.
From thermal refurbishment to charging stations
The conversion includes the thermal refurbishment of the buildings and the optimization of the control of heated acid/alkali tanks, the switch to a heating system with groundwater heat pumps and low-temperature radiators as well as a photovoltaic system that covers the electricity requirements for the heat pumps and e-charging stations.
Savings of 120 tons of CO₂
The annual savings amount to around 120 tons of CO₂ - roughly equivalent to the annual energy consumption of 50 households. The 220 kWp photovoltaic system will generate around 220,000 kWh of electricity per year, covering the annual consumption of the two heat pumps (73 and 110 kW).
Sustainability as a corporate strategy
Sustainability is a central component of Brenntag's corporate strategy. The project was also co-financed by the Brenntag Carbon Fund.
