"Exoskeletons can reduce strain when working in unergonomic postures, for example when working overhead or with the upper body bent far forward or repeatedly bent forward, such as when lifting heavy loads," says Bernhard Arenz, Head of the Prevention Department at BG Bau. However, the exoskeleton should be used correctly and match the activity. For example, it should first be analyzed how often which strenuous movements and body positions have to be performed, which loads have to be transported and how heavy the work equipment used is.
Keep an eye on the disadvantages
When selecting an exoskeleton, the focus should also be on how easy or complicated it is to put on the exoskeleton, how comfortable it is to wear and whether the system is even designed for the respective working conditions. According to Arenz, another point is the ability to combine it with other personal protective equipment.
Exoskeleton or cleaning machine
An article in BG BAU aktuell describes the different types of exoskeletons available. It also discusses the advantages and disadvantages of their use. For example, it states that exoskeletons should only be used from an occupational safety perspective if other, more effective measures are not available or are insufficiently effective. If, for example, a large area needs to be mopped during cleaning, a cleaning machine is a good alternative to the monotonous manual work with a mop. This is easy to operate and provides effective relief for employees.
