BASF uses 100% renewable electricity in the USA

BASF Coatings is now using 100% electricity from renewable sources at key sites in North America. This is expected to save the company 11,000 tons of CO2 annually.

Since January 2025, BASF Coatings has switched to renewable energy sources at its North American sites in Greenville, Ohio, and Blackman Township in Jackson County, Michigan. According to the company, this will result in a reduction of over 11,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

At the Greenville site, BASF Coatings produces resins, cathodic dip coatings and clear coats, while the Blackman Township site specializes in surface treatment solutions under the Chemetall brand. By investing in renewable electricity, the company aims to minimize its environmental impact and increase sustainability in its operations while helping customers achieve their sustainability goals. To date, 17 of the company's sites in all regions of the world already use electricity from renewable sources.

Savings potential of thin-film technology

"This transformation is another measure that underlines our commitment to achieving our climate protection goals," said Dr. Markus Piepenbrink, Head of Sustainability at BASF Coatings. BASF is also developing CO2-reduced solutions, for example through the use of thin-film technologies or the mass balance approach.
