At automatica 2025, ABB Robotics demonstrated the steps the company has already taken towards greater autonomy in industrial robotics. "Over the past ten years, we have given robots eyes through AI-powered 3D vision technology, hands through advanced force sensors and precise control, and mobility through autonomous navigation. Now it's time to combine these capabilities and go one step further," says Marc Segura, Head of ABB's Robotics Division.
Robots with six core competencies
ABB's concept for Autonomous Versatile Robotics is based on six core competencies that combine attributes such as advanced AI-powered vision, precision, speed, dexterity and mobility to achieve higher productivity and flexibility. The six development fields are firstly human-robot interaction - from programming to instruction, then sensor technology and perception - the aim here is to enhance robots with image, force and other sensors using AI. ABB Robotic also deals with autonomous thinking - at robot or fleet level. The fourth area of expertise lies in motion control and safety - the latest solutions for automatic, collision-free path planning are available here. Localization, mapping and navigation is another area of development, as well as the enhancement of dexterity through sensors, E2E Foundation models (VLA) and other methods.
