Precision Micro: More flexibility for bipolar plates through etching

Abstract

Compared to machining processes, the photochemical etching process offers greater design freedom at minimal cost and investment. In addition, higher channel densities can be achieved and thinner bipolar plates can be produced.

Bipolar plates, which form the basis for modules in low-temperature electrolyzer systems, are usually made of metal. Photochemical etching offers advantages over other processes such as stamping, laser cutting or hydroforming because it is faster and more economical. For example, designers can flexibly adapt the design of the bipolar plates because, unlike conventional machining processes, photochemical etching does not require any forming tools.
