The wild ride goes on

Anzeige

It was a good time when the economy was humming along at national and global level like a good-humored V8 kicking down the freeway. Even Trump's government actions failed to seriously stutter the engine. But then came the pandemic, then came the Ukraine war and, in addition to a sudden energy shortage problem, global trade suffered a choking hiccup.

The fact that a government is currently in office in Germany that repeatedly seems to forget that Germany is not a desert island, but must survive in global competition as a business location, does not make things any better. The fact that the combined Western military supply resources are clearly not enough for a country striving towards the West to gain the upper hand in the struggle for survival also gives pause for thought. It is also worrying that it looks as if a second Trump era is becoming increasingly likely.

Accepting the challenge instead of burying your head in the sand

The president, who in his view was never legally voted out of office, is already wildly anticipating how he will trample on the constitution. What would that mean for Europe and NATO? Let us hope that the remaining democratically oriented governments in Europe and the world have sufficiently realized that it is time to put aside the sand pans and finally pick up the big shovels.

In short, crises and unavoidable events - but unfortunately also decisions made by authorities, commissions and governments - will continue to make life difficult for the industry in 2024. The phase of boisterous growth is likely to be over in many sectors, but that is no reason to bury your head in the sand and carry on as before for as long as possible. Companies need to differentiate themselves, become better at what they do, find new fields of activity and reinvent themselves where necessary. Otherwise, shrinking markets will lead to growing problems.

For example, a sheet metal manufacturer, dissatisfied with the contract powder coating services available on the market, has set up its own coating line from scratch, relies on modern measuring and control systems such as a closed loop control system and now stands out from its competitors for its customers thanks to its flexibility, delivery reliability and quality. The Practical Powder Coating Forum in Wetzlar also provided plenty of interesting food for thought, from classic technology topics and systematic approaches to optimization to AI and dealing with insurance - you can read the detailed follow-up report from page 28 in mo 1-2/2024.
