The recurrence of expensive damage or production downtime can be avoided in future: The guideline VDI 3822 "Damage analysis" describes the systematic procedure for an optimal damage analysis.

Products are manufactured for safe and reliable use. Despite careful design and manufacture as well as thorough testing, it is not always possible to avoid faults and damage. However, cases of damage cause economic losses due to loss of production, consequential damage and repair measures. Targeted measures to remedy and prevent damage can only be introduced if the causes of damage and the influences of faults are clarified through systematic investigations. The VDI has now published guideline 3822 "Failure analysis" for this purpose.

Optimize material development and selection

Failure analyses in accordance with guideline 3822 "Failure analysis" can contribute to the improvement of material development, material selection, design, production and operation. In addition, the knowledge gained can be used immediately for quality assurance and damage prevention. Failure analyses are also used to find the optimum material, design, manufacturing and component properties for a technical product from a cost perspective.
