At the beginning of August, the Federal Ministry of Economics published an options paper on the electricity market design. The VDMA comments on this: "Electricity market design still has many question marks"

On the occasion of the presentation of the options paper on the future electricity market design by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWK), Dr. Dennis Rendschmidt, Managing Director of VDMA Power Systems, said: "The wait is finally over. It is good that the process of defining the future electricity market design is now continuing." However, the options paper would avoid setting a clear course in many areas. For example, the model favored by the BMWK for secure power threatens to become too complicated. The VDMA doubts whether this could work, as this type of capacity mechanism has not yet been implemented anywhere in the world. "What is needed is a pragmatic approach that does not try to cover every eventuality, but instead focuses on the important goal - security of supply," says Rendschmidt.

No investments without a power plant security law

The VDMA is also calling for the Power Plant Safety Act (KWSG) to be brought to the table as soon as possible. This law ensures the necessary compatibility and provides an incentive for investment. "The future investment framework for renewable energies must be designed in such a way that the expansion can finally follow the political target path and does not come to a halt," concludes the Managing Director of VDMA Power Systems.
