Between regulatory frenzy and loss of reality: How the new "BREF" is burdening the industry: An interview with Dr. Malte Zimmer about the new BREF, bureaucracy, unrealistic regulation and the dangers for the future viability of Europe as an industrial location.

Dr. Malte-Matthias Zimmer has been the ZVO's Head of Environmental and Chemicals Policy since July 2017. He is responsible for the strategic orientation and representation of the industry's interests in environmental and chemical law matters and coordinates cooperation between association members, with other associations and with authorities. In this interview, he vividly and forcefully explains the shortcomings and risks of the new BREF version.

Not only were the framework conditions redefined in an arbitrary and sometimes chaotic manner. The data collection and evaluation scheme also have obvious weaknesses: “If a student were to hand in something like this in their first semester, they would undoubtedly fail,” says Zimmer, commenting on the structure of the questionnaires.
