SKZ tests plastic products with terahertz

The Plastics Center (SKZ) is relying on terahertz and radar measurement technology for non-destructive quality control. These methods enable precise, non-contact testing of layer thicknesses and geometries directly during production.

Dimensional accuracy and freedom from defects are key requirements for plastic products. The SKZ uses terahertz and radar technologies for the inspection of pipes, for example, or the analysis of multi-layer composite systems, which detect layer thicknesses and geometries without contact and at depth. Both methods are gaining in importance with increasing automation and Industry 4.0. The SKZ, a member of the ZUSE community, uses these measurement methods to determine optimal solutions in cooperation with industry.

Advantages with opaque materials

Optical measurement methods reach their limits with opaque or foamed plastics. Terahertz and radar technology, on the other hand, enables reliable testing even with limited access to components. This allows manufacturing errors to be detected and tolerances to be reduced - contributing to material efficiency and process reliability.

Simple integration into production systems

As the systems do not require radiation protection, they can be flexibly integrated into existing production lines. The SKZ supports companies in adapting the technology to specific processes and thus promotes digitally networked quality controls.
