Different surface structures can significantly alter the subjective color similarity of two plastic components. This was the starting point for the "OFHarmonie" research project, which was carried out by the SKZ Plastics Center in collaboration with the Institute of Psychology at the University of Würzburg.
The researchers wanted to determine the perception threshold up to which structure-related color differences are acceptable to observers and develop approaches for targeted compensation. The long-term goal is to develop a method for adjusting colors in such a way that a harmonious overall impression is created despite varying surface structures.
Combination of measurement technology and psychometrics
In addition to classic metrics such as color, brightness, and gloss, surface parameters and industrial image processing methods were also included. Supplementary psychometric studies recorded subjective perception and related it to the measurement data.
The result: pure color measurements are not sufficient to explain visual differences. Only the combined consideration of color, gloss, and structure parameters enables reliable statements to be made about visual harmony.
Impulses for design and quality assurance
The findings provide an important basis for industrial color and surface design – especially in design-critical areas such as automotive interiors. This gives companies new approaches for systematically ensuring color continuity across different components.
