Prof. Holger Kersten wins the Rudolf Jaeckel Prize 2025

The German Vacuum Society (DVG) has awarded Prof. Holger Kersten from the Institute of Experimental and Applied Physics at Kiel University with the Rudolf Jaeckel Prize 2025. The award was presented at the V2025 "International Conference and Exhibition for Vacuum - Plasma - Surface - Coating" in Dresden.

Kersten received the award "in recognition of his outstanding achievements in the areas of science and technology supervised by the DVG, in particular for his outstanding work in plasma physics, the development of methods for plasma diagnostics and plasma-based layer growth". The DVG thus recognized both his scientific contributions and his importance for the application of plasma physics methods in research and industry.

Kersten is a professor at the Institute for Experimental and Applied Physics at Kiel University; his research focuses on plasma physics, plasma diagnostics, thin-film and surface technologies and the application of complex or plasma-based processes. His scientific work is documented in numerous publications and lectures.

Award winner also active in the DVG

This year's award winner is closely associated with the DVG: He was first elected to the Board of Directors of the German Vacuum Society in 2020 and is involved in the work of the society. His work on the Board Council underlines his connection between research and the professional community as well as his commitment to scientific and technical exchange.

Kersten gave his award lecture entitled "Gas discharge Physics: Examples for basics, diagnostics and applications" at V2025. Prof. Sven Ulrich, President of the DVG, gave the laudatory speech for the prizewinner in his own prizewinner session.

The Rudolf Jaeckel Prize of the DVG emphasizes the importance of basic research and methodological innovation in the vacuum and plasma-related sciences. By honoring Kersten, the DVG is sending a clear signal about the relevance of plasma physics research for industrial applications - for example in surface technology, energy technology, micro/nano manufacturing and environmental technology.
