Microturbines differ from CHP units in that they have an air-bearing and thus lubricant- and coolant-free rotating shaft on which all mechanically stressed components are mounted. The lubrication- and coolant-free air bearing results in both a very low maintenance requirement of just under five hours per year and a service life of 80,000 operating hours with a general overhaul after approx. 48,000 operating hours. Even without a catalytic converter or other gas purification systems, the exhaust gas values are extremely low (NOx<18mg/m³, CO<50mg/m³). The company Colour-Line GmbH, founded in 2019 as a subsidiary of the Swabian system supplier Alu-Line, has been using a Capstone C50 micro gas turbine since 2020 and thus supplies the stoving furnace, treatment baths and the company building with heat. The electricity is used in the company's own operations. Thus, with the help of the microturbine CHP plant, energy costs were already reduced by almost 30,000 euros in the first six months. Conversion of the existing turbine plant to hydrogen is possible at manageable cost if the fuel is available.
