IFW integrates sensor technology in grinding wheel

To improve process monitoring, the Institute of Manufacturing Technology and Machine Tools (IFW) in a cooperative project develops a method of integrating strain sensors into high-performance grinding wheels.

IFW and the company Krebs & Riedel Schleifscheibenfabrik GmbH are working together as a project team in the cooperation project "Productivity increase in high-performance grinding (Pro²HS)". The aim of this project is to be able to monitor the grinding process at peripheral speeds of up to 150 m/s in parallel with the process. To this end, a novel balancing system and a sensory grinding wheel are being developed. The balancing system will enable automatic and machine-independent balancing of the grinding wheel.

The sensory grinding wheel will be equipped with semiconductor strain gauges that enable highly accurate measurement of the process forces. "This allows us to set the process parameters right up to the stability limit of the wheel and exploit the full potential of the grinding wheel," explains IFW employee Niklas Klages. The project team members are developing a new type of base body for simple and economical integration of the strain gauges. Also part of the project is the development of the monitoring algorithms.
