With Galvanocalc & Learn, apprentices in electroplating and surface treatment now have access to a new web app for their day-to-day work. The free application was developed by Timo Leuthold, an apprentice surface coater at ADE Metallveredelung and a student at the vocational school in Schwäbisch Gmünd. The app is available at galvanocalc.app and is designed to provide digital support for typical tasks in the apprenticeship program.
The focus is on functions for electroplating calculations, process documentation, and exam preparation. The app was created to address the need to solve recurring challenges in the apprenticeship program in a practical way—from bath calculations to quickly looking up technical terms and material data.
Nine functional areas for everyday training
According to the developer, Galvanocalc & Learn combines nine functional areas. These include calculators for electroplating calculations, a metal database, a bath configurator called Bath Builder, process logs with PDF export, a technical glossary, and a quiz module for exam preparation. The application thus covers computational, documentation, and learning-related tasks.
Leuthold is supported by his vocational school classmate Ioannis Gavrillidis, who handles organizational matters. The two met at vocational school. The app was developed in their free time and is aimed at aspiring professionals who want to structure their workflows and build specialized knowledge in a targeted manner.
Local Data Storage in the Browser
Technically, the application does not require its own backend. It is based on Vanilla JavaScript, Tailwind CSS, and jsPDF. A key focus is on data protection: user data is stored locally in the browser via localStorage. A dedicated privacy policy, as well as technical and organizational measures, are documented.
To ensure technical accuracy, all formulas and calculation methods were verified against recognized industry references. This is intended to ensure that the content is reliable not only for learning but also for practical use in vocational training.
Initial contacts within the industry have already been established. Leuthold has entered into an exclusive partnership with the ZVO and is also in dialogue with other associations and companies such as the DGO and the BIA Group. The free web app is available now.
