Frei Lacke improves paint formulation for agricultural machinery

For a customer in the agricultural machinery industry, Frei Lacke improved the formulations in the wet paint structure and reduced the density of the products. This reduced VOC emissions and accelerated drying times.

The stability and edge coverage of the paint previously used by agricultural machinery manufacturer Horsch were unsatisfactory. As the company paints many large surfaces in addition to frames and small parts, very good and reliable spray mist absorption was essential. VOC emissions also needed to be reduced.

Horsch red significantly improved

Horsch decided to switch to the Frei Lacke system UR1937HRU735 in combination with UR1409GH3307. The Black Forest manufacturer was able to impress with its system paint concept and guarantee an identical shade of red - the so-called Horsch red - in both powder and liquid paint quality. However, because a paint from the automotive sector had previously provided a particularly high-quality finish, the process of the Frei Lacke system was repeatedly questioned, reports Stefan Kritzer, Sales Manager Vehicle Construction at Frei Lacke. Frei Lacke therefore optimized the formulations of the PU primer UR1933HRU735 and the PU topcoat UR1447NH3307 until the desired result was achieved.

Good flow, good application properties

The optimized paint structure is suitable for industrial goods and construction machinery of all kinds. The primer and topcoat contain solvents and are based on polyurethane / isocyanate-crosslinking polyacrylate resin as a binder. The top coat is available in "high gloss" quality. In addition to the required high corrosion protection, the solvent-based primer offers good adhesion to various substrates - including steel, also blasted or iron-phosphated, as well as stainless steel. The matching UHS topcoat UR1447N is characterized by good flow and good application properties. Its processing window is a maximum of two hours at 20 °C after the addition of hardener. The solids volume after hardener addition is 455 ml / kg (± 10).
