The titanium oxide contained in white coatings strongly weakens color effects due to diffuse light scattering. Stratifying clearcoat systems can solve this problem. For some time now, the Fraunhofer IPA has been working on stratifying paint systems in which the pigments themselves stratify rather than - as is usually the case - binder components. The institute has developed a special surface modification for pigment stratification, which, based on thermodynamic efficiencies, enables the targeted scattering of surface energies at the pigment surfaces.
