The Debrecen plant marks a historic turning point in automotive surface technology. The BMW Group's first completely fossil-free paint shop has been in operation there since the end of 2024 - a real milestone in terms of sustainability. The start of series production of the eagerly awaited "New Class" will begin there in September 2025.
Fossil-free as the new standard - from vision to reality
Debrecen is not a pilot project, not a showcase, but a comprehensive system solution. Process heat, pre-treatment, cathodic dip coating, drying - all powered purely by electricity. A significant proportion of the electricity comes from the company's own photovoltaic system; surpluses are temporarily stored and used to heat the furnace when required. A multivalent heat storage system links waste heat sources such as compressed air systems and refrigeration systems with hot water preparation. Not only is the energy mix green, but its use is also maximally efficient.
Dry instead of wet - limestone powder replaces millions of liters of water
In 2010, the first paint mist separation system using limestone powder went into operation in Regensburg, resulting in massive savings in the conditioning and separation of paint overspray. Since then, BMW has been using dry separation technologies in more and more plants. In the paint shop in Debrecen, this means 80 percent less conditioned cabin air, 17 million liters of water and over 17,000 MWh of energy savings - per year. BMW quantifies this with over 5,000 tons of CO₂ savings. The Dingolfing and Regensburg plants have also already switched over.
Digitalization becomes an efficiency machine
With the BMW iFACTORY initiative, painting is becoming a data-driven process. AI-based robotics take over the surface inspection, autonomous platforms organize the body transport, all data points are networked - from energy generation to quality assurance. The result: fewer rejects, less resource consumption, less manual intervention. What has been tried and tested in other plants is now being brought together and perfected in Debrecen.
Sustainability in detail - from potato starch to ORC
BMW also shows a willingness to innovate beyond large-scale technology: In Dingolfing, biodegradable potato starch-based films protect the car bodies. In Regensburg, the refurbishment of the recooling systems saves 53 million liters of water per year. And a new ORC module in Dingolfing converts waste heat into electricity - another 1,000 tons of CO₂ less.
Investing in the future - not in PR
The concept and implementation of the paint shop in Debrecen shows that BMW is very serious about sustainability and resource conservation and is also willing to break new ground. The other plants are also being developed in this direction, with around 200 million euros being invested in infrastructure, digitalization and sustainability in Regensburg and Wackersdorf. Despite difficult times, not only for the automotive industry, 600 new employees were also hired last year (2024).
