BASF Coatings has launched a new, state-of-the-art production plant for automotive series coatings at its Münster site. The line is designed for so-called high-runner products - i.e. color shades that currently cover a large proportion of demand. It is intended to ensure consistently high paint quality and at the same time increase production efficiency.
The investment is a strategic milestone for BASF Coatings and underlines the company's long-term competitiveness in the high-volume coatings sector. An extensive degree of automation enables more resource-efficient operation and at the same time improves process stability and reliability.
The production facility is one of the most important investments of the past five years. From the initial concept studies in 2019 through around two and a half years of construction to the current start of production, the project was largely shaped by the expertise of the BASF Coatings teams.
Reliable product quality and stability
"With the new plant, we have invested in an advanced process that ensures high and reliable product quality and stability. Our customers benefit directly from this," adds Nils Lessmann, Senior Vice President Global Operations Paint & Resin. "As a next step, our teams in Asia-Pacific and North America will adopt these best practices and further strengthen our global production network."
The plant is designed to reduce energy consumption and thus lower CO₂ emissions - another building block for greater sustainability at BASF Coatings. The Münster site has been supplied entirely with renewable wind energy since 2022; according to the company, this will avoid around 4,000 tons of CO₂ annually. Münster is thus one of several BASF Coatings sites in Europe, Asia-Pacific and North America that operate with 100% renewable electricity.
