Audi uses artificial intelligence to optimize processes in its paint shop

Audi is testing applications based on artificial intelligence for process monitoring and energy saving in the paint shop at its Neckarsulm site. The focus is on pretreatment, cathodic dip coating, and drying.

Audi is also pushing ahead with the use of artificial intelligence in its paint shop. Several data-based applications are currently being tested at the Neckarsulm site with the aim of stabilizing paint processes, reducing energy consumption, and supporting quality assurance.

A key approach is the use of ProcessGuardAI for process monitoring. The system is currently being used in two pilot projects in the paint shop: for dosage optimization in pretreatment and for anomaly detection in cathodic dip coating (CDC). Based on machine and sensor data, the system monitors processes in real time and detects deviations at an early stage. The transition to series production is planned for the second quarter of 2026.

Controlling drying processes in a more resource-efficient manner

Audi is also testing an artificial intelligence-based control system for longitudinal dryers in the paint shop. Existing controllers for temperature and air volume are connected to an intelligent system that continuously analyzes and adjusts process parameters. The aim is to be able to react more quickly to changing conditions and to make the drying process as energy-efficient as possible. Audi will be investigating the potential savings that can be achieved in ongoing operations by summer 2026.

The applications are part of an overarching digitalization strategy with which Audi is integrating data-based methods more strongly into its production processes. In the paint shop, systems based on artificial intelligence will increase process stability and reduce manual intervention in the future.
