Making lightweight components and thus more economical driving possible by using less material has become increasingly important in the context of sustainability in the automotive industry. The surface specialist Dörken has investigated the factors that influence the use of materials. It turns out that not only mechanical stress is one of these factors, but also corrosion protection. Here, additional safety margins are calculated in on structurally relevant components to prevent possible damage during the component's service life. However, the additional material application drives up the component weight. Optimized corrosion protection can help reduce the safety margins.
