Wagner: On rails

At the site of the Bochumer Verein Verkehrstechnik (BVV), wheels for rail vehicles are forged and sometimes combined into complete wheelset systems. To meet the increasing demand, a highly efficient coating plant was installed in 2022.

BVV is meeting the increased demand for components for rail transport with a comprehensive modernisation of the production network. This included a solution for individual wheel painting for primer and top coat application that could be easily integrated into the complex production process. BVV attached great importance to sustainable and resource-saving production. Walther Spritz- und Lackiersysteme GmbH was commissioned with the design and construction of a new painting line. The new painting line is divided into two segments. In the first segment, the rail wheels are masked and primed manually. In the second step, the top coat is applied fully automatically by robot.

With its economical use of resources, the new plant enables BVV to reduce material consumption and also costs, especially for paint disposal. By modernising its surface technology with the help of various components and technologies, the Bochum-based company, which was founded in 1842, has been able to significantly expand its production capacities, improve the quality of its surfaces and also save a considerable amount of application material and energy
