To make a ship's hull suitable for seawater or to automatically preserve large-format steel sheets inline, various process steps have to be linked together. In a 180-meter-long plant with a plate line and a profile line, large parts for cruise ships receive the necessary protection.

Whether shipyard or steel rolling mill, plant manufacturer Rösler plans and implements plants that meet special requirements. The projects are always carried out in close cooperation between the employees of the respective Rösler branch office on site, specialists at the main plant in Untermerzbach and the customer's project team.

One important reference project was carried out in cooperation with China Merchants Cruise Shipbuilding (CMCS). CMCS is a major manufacturer of expedition ships, floating platforms and floating loading cranes. The preservation of the plates and profiles required for the ships had previously been outsourced. This was to change with the expansion of the business to include passenger and cruise ships. For a medium-sized passenger ship, the ship's shell alone consists of 25,000 tons of steel. Accordingly, a partner was sought for the establishment of an efficient preservation line. After intensive market research, the Chinese company turned to Rösler. The decisive factor was the technical implementation and efficiency of several reference projects in European shipyards, which Rösler was the only supplier to provide.

Fully automated, interlinked preservation

The 180-meter-long preservation solution, which is individually tailored to the requirements of CMCS, consists of a plate line, the so-called main line, and a profile line from which the blasted profiles are fed into the main line. In addition to the two roller conveyor blast machines with optimally adapted Gamma 400G and Rutten Gamma 400 HD turbines, respectively, straightening systems for the profiles and up to 12,000 mm long sheets, a fully automated painting system including paint supply and a thermal afterburner are integrated. All plant components are intelligently networked and integrated into the shipyard's production system. As a result, the parts can be processed fully automatically from the loading to the removal zone at a feed rate of five meters per minute. The short throughput times with high process stability and reproducibility as well as minimal manpower requirements, together with the robust and wear-optimized design of the line, contribute to the fact that CMCS has gained a competitive edge with the preservation line.
