Abstract

Those who know their enemy can counter them more effectively - this also applies to microbiology. Those who understand the rules behind growth can take precautions more easily and prevent bigger problems.

It is not uncommon for coating defects to have something to do with contamination. But what is this actually and how do biofilms or germs develop? A somewhat different look at this problem should ideally be an eye-opener. For some years now, researchers have been trying to better understand the connections and interactions between the immense number of variations by determining the microbiome. In general, microorganisms can be recognised by slimy or soapy coatings on the edges of the bathtub and in the pipe system. This is the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS). A matrix of polysaccharides, proteins, glycoproteins, glycolipids and extracellular DNA. This EPS supports high diversity, improves the nutrient uptake of the individual microorganisms living in it and also provides protection against environmental influences such as disinfection measures.

The properties of surfaces play a decisive role in their colonisation. About 90 percent of microorganisms in aqueous systems are found on surfaces or attached to suspended matter. Soft plastics such as those used for seals are particularly favourable for microorganisms. It is therefore worthwhile to check seals regularly and replace them from time to time - sometimes a decisive step towards more stable processes. In addition, switching from chromium(VI) to chromium(III) or even chromium-free variants improves the conditions for microorganisms enormously. Therefore, measures should be established in every coating plant to prevent biofilms in technical processes.
