The European Supply Chain Directive (CSDDD) already includes companies with 500 employees or more. This means that many more steel and metal processing companies will be affected in the future. "The associated regulatory effort requires disproportionately high resources that companies don't even have. National inspection bodies will also have to expand massively," complains Volker Bockskopf, Head of Environment and Occupational Health and Safety at the German Steel and Metal Processing Association (WSM).
According to the WSM, companies in these sectors are well aware of the importance of human rights and environmental protection. And they are already mobilizing all their efforts to integrate appropriate measures into their business processes. "Our industry is already implementing the due diligence obligations to an increasing extent," says WSM Managing Director Christian Vietmeyer. Increasing these obligations again now due to the CSDDD would be a blow to medium-sized companies.
