Plasmatreat presents open-air plasma at Fakuma 2024

At its stand, Plasmatreat will be demonstrating the environmentally friendly and efficient surface treatment of (recycled) plastic to improve downstream processes using practical applications.

Atmospheric pressure plasma technology enables the targeted modification of surface properties in order to prepare them for the requirements of downstream processes. Plasmatreat GmbH will be presenting the numerous possibilities offered by this technology at Fakuma 2024 at stand 1210 in hall A1.

Combining incompatible plastics

Openair plasma surface pretreatment can significantly increase the adhesive strength of adhesives and coatings in industrial applications thanks to its targeted surface modification of difficult-to-process plastics such as PP and PE. Plasma can also be used to bond plastics that were originally incompatible. This allows manufacturers to consider more materials for an application and, for example, replace technical plastics with more cost-effective standard plastics or recycled materials.

Surface activation of plastic components

Visitors to the trade fair stand can experience the various applications of plasma technology live: a PTU1212 (Plasma Treatment Unit) demonstrates the surface activation of plastic components. In this application, gentle activation takes place with an open-air plasma rotation nozzle. The second nozzle in the PTU is a special PlasmaPlus coating nozzle. By adding a silicon-like precursor to the plasma jet, nano-thin layers can be deposited on plastic surfaces without solvent-based chemicals. Depending on the application, the surface is given different properties.

Application of tapes on plasma-treated surfaces

It will also be shown how plasma treatment works on plastic surfaces, for example when a tape is applied afterwards. To this end, the plasma experts will first demonstrate on the live plasma table how test specimens made of various plastics are activated. Then there is the opportunity to apply a tape to test specimens on the demo system from Plasmatreat partner Glaub Automation and to prove the effectiveness of the treatment with open-air plasma using various tests. The application heads from Glaub Automation can be used to apply adhesive tapes (single-sided or double-sided adhesive, with or without liner), pads and foams in a fully automated process.

Plasma treatment of door profiles

Another system demonstrates the automated plasma treatment of EPDM door profiles. Several static nozzles are used to activate the door profiles and prepare them for the subsequent application of VOC-free and solvent-free adhesives and coatings in the form of flock or bonded coatings. Plasma technology also offers advantages here: Thanks to the number of nozzles, selective but also full-surface pre-treatment of the profile can be carried out. The plasma system replaces conventional pre-treatment methods such as mechanical brushing or the application of primers.
