Designed by aerospace engineer Zsolt Pataki, the fountain pen is made of a solid titanium bar and hardened by Expanite Hard-Ti, making it durable and virtually unscratchable. Pataki chose Titanium Grade 23 from the beginning of the design process: "In my quest for increased wear resistance in titanium, I really wanted to avoid the hurdles of a coating - applying layers that affect the dimensions, combined with the risk of them chipping later - as I prefer a monolithic construction with the original titanium surface instead of a coating."
Pataki attended a webinar with Expanite that introduced the titanium hardening solution. "I quickly realized that the Expanite Hard-Ti process was the only mature and commercially available interstitial hardening technology for titanium," Pataki says. The ExpaniteHard-Ti process provides highly effective protection against wear and scratches by hardening the surface of the material itself.
