Environmental management award for BIA

Automotive supplier BIA received the Environmental Management Award 2023 from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV). The company was honored for its palladium recovery in the galvanic process.

To make plastic components electrically conductive, palladium is used in the electroplating process for pre-treatment. The rare metal is lost in the rinsing bath. BIA has now found a way to recover palladium so that it can be fed back into the process. Thanks to this measure, the CO2 emissions required for the recovery of new palladium can be greatly reduced.

Dr. Felix A. Heinzler, who was responsible for the implementation of the project as Head of Development and Process Technology, is delighted with the award: "It's nice to see that even supposedly smaller measures to protect the environment and resources receive attention and appreciation." Although the total savings from palladium recovery are rather low compared to the industry as a whole, the award shows a general awareness that all operational measures to save energy and resources are an important component in achieving climate targets. "Seen across the entire industry, the savings potential also adds up significantly," emphasizes Dr. Heinzler.
