The draft standard describes requirements for decorative electroplated coatings (nickel, nickel-chromium, copper-nickel, copper-nickel-chromium). They apply to coatings on iron, steel, zinc and copper alloys as well as aluminum in order to improve appearance and corrosion protection. The draft contains designations for various electroplated coatings, which differ according to coating thickness and type. It also provides guidelines for selecting suitable coatings - depending on the stress level of the product.
Exclusions and limitations of the standard
The document does not specify requirements for the required surface condition of the base metal prior to the coating process (see notes in 5.4) and does not apply to coatings on sheets, strips or wires in unmachined form (semi-finished products) or to fasteners with threads or spiral springs.
