Brillux is the first supplier whose powder coatings have been approved by the Swiss Federal Office for Defence Procurement armasuisse for this field of application. Until now, liquid coating systems have predominantly been used for corresponding military applications.
The certification covers Premium Polyester Powder 5936 in F9 and HR grades as well as coordinated primers. Potential applications include vehicle components, equipment, and transport and space containers.
F9 Powder Coatings for Camouflage in the Infrared Spectrum
Polyester Powder 5936 is intended for metallic substrates and outdoor applications. The F9 version also has properties designed to provide camouflage in the near-infrared spectral range. Approved colors include RAL 6014-F9 Yellow Olive, RAL 6031-F9 Bronze Green, RAL 8027-F9 Leather Brown, and RAL 9021-F9 Tar Black.
The HR version is available in colors including Basalt Grey, Pearl White, Cream White, Pure White, and Yellow Olive. Korro-Protect EP 5816-7100 is specified as the primer. For galvanized or heavily outgassing substrates, EP 5819-7101 epoxy corrosion protection primer can be used. This allows the complete coating system to be applied using coordinated powder coating products.
Powder Coating as an Alternative to Liquid Coating
For industrial coaters, the approval expands the options available for components used in military applications. Powder coatings contain no volatile organic solvents and allow a high level of material utilization through powder recovery. Solvent-related flash-off phases are eliminated, and powder coating processes can also be largely automated.
The approval is therefore particularly relevant for coating companies that already have the necessary equipment and operate as suppliers for military applications.
Brillux also already holds corresponding approvals for applications for the German Armed Forces. Since 2017, the company has held approval from the German Armed Forces Research Institute for Materials, Fuels and Lubricants in accordance with VG 95211. The F9 color range includes Bronze Green, Leather Brown, Tar Black, and Sand Beige.
