AkzoNobel, a manufacturer of paints and coatings, has announced that its two IATF-16949-certified production centers in Barcelona and Vilafranca will be expanded to include the Automotive Interior and Metal product portfolio. The process is expected to be completed by mid-2024. The project involves a total investment of 14 million euros. In addition to production capacities, research and development facilities are being created on site. A total of 84 new jobs will be created in operations and R&D. Sergio Olivas, Manufacturing Director Europe West & Country Custodian Iberia at AkzoNobel, says: "With this expansion and investment, we can continue to offer the best service and product range to our automotive customers in EMEA."
For a sustainable production process, renewable energies will be used and recycling management criteria will be taken into account. The plants in Barcelona (Zona Franca) and Vilafranca del Penedès will be equipped with photovoltaic modules. Any additional electricity required will be obtained from renewable sources. This underscores AkzoNobel's goal of first halving its own CO2 emissions and ultimately using 100% renewable energy in 2030.
