92 percent lower energy costs thanks to photovoltaic system at BASF site in South Africa

Chemetall is installing a state-of-the-art photovoltaic plant in Boksburg, South Africa. The BASF subsidiary is thus taking the next step in the use of renewable energies and the continuous improvement of its CO2 footprint.

The Surface Technologies business unit of BASF's Coatings division, which operates under the Chemetall brand, has commissioned a high-performance photovoltaic system at its site in Boksburg, South Africa. The introduction of the new photovoltaic system in Boksburg is a further element of the company's activities to utilize sustainable and renewable energy sources at its sites.

1,725 square meters of solar modules - 600 kW of storage

Chemetall's modern photovoltaic system comprises 1,725 square meters of solar modules installed on the roofs in Boksburg and a total of 600 kW of battery storage systems. Thanks to the completion of this project and the use of renewable energy, Chemetall expects to reduce current energy costs by 92% and thus reduce CO2 emissions at its South African site. BASF aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

Autonomy in the energy supply

The photovoltaic system provides a reliable and stable power supply for administration, production, warehousing, technical services and quality control at the site. "Our advanced photovoltaic plant in Boksburg is another step towards improving our carbon footprint while increasing our operational autonomy and reliability in South Africa," says Frank Naber, Senior Vice President of Chemetall.
