ZVO working group on dealing with complexity

During a two-day meeting, representatives from ZVO, industry and universities discussed how complex challenges in technical and organizational environments can be better understood and dealt with in the future.

On November 19 and 20, 2025, representatives from science, industry and the German Surface Technology Association (ZVO) discussed the topic of "complexity". Under the leadership of Dr Malte-Matthias Zimmer, Head of Department at the ZVO, the working group with employees from Zeschky as well as students and young researchers from TU Ilmenau, TU Aalen and Mittweida University of Applied Sciences addressed the question of how complex challenges can be identified and dealt with in practice.

Complex instead of complicated

It quickly became clear in the discussions that complicated problems can usually be solved using knowledge, data and methods, while complex situations require decisions in which not all factors are known or controllable. This insight called into question familiar, rather linear ways of thinking. New approaches such as pattern recognition, analogical thinking, iterative decisions and openness to corrections are required.

Practical exercises and outlook

The participants tested these approaches in group work using case studies. They analyzed the actors and conditions involved and developed initial strategies for dealing with complex situations. The potential use of modern AI for simulation and decision support was also discussed. A planned more extensive simulation game had to be omitted due to time constraints, but will be repeated in a future format. Dr. Zimmer emphasized the dedicated cooperation of the group and spoke of an "enriching experience".
